Thetroveofleakedclassifieddocuments,numberinghundredsofpagesandresultinginthearrestofaU.S.airnationalguardsmanonchargesofdisclosingclassifiednationaldefenseinformationwithoutauthorization,hasseentheUnitedStatesscrambletoassessthedamageandrestrictaccesstoclassifiedinformationforcertainemployeesattheDepartmentofDefense.

WASHINGTON,April18(Xinhua)--TheUnitedStateseavesdroppedonconversationsoftheUnitedNationsSecretary-GeneralAntonioGuterresandotherUNofficials,accordingtoareportbyTheWashingtonPostcitingleakedclassifiedintelligencedocumentsthenewspaperobtained.

GuterresexpressedtoUNofficialsandworldleadershis"outrage"overbeingdeniedanopportunitytovisitEthiopia"swar-tornTigrayregion,ThePostsaidinaMondayreport,citingfourdocuments,twoofthempreviouslyunreported.

Guterres,accordingtoonedatedFeb.17andseenbyThePost,wantedtoconfrontEthiopianUNRepresentativeTayeAtskeSelassieAmdeasthecountry"sforeignminister,DemekeMekonnen,sentGuterresaletterrejectinghisplannedvisittoTigrayamidpeacenegotiations.

AnotherdocumentobtainedbyThePostrevealedthatGuterreswas"nothappy"abouthavingtotraveltoKievtomeetUkrainianPresidentVolodymyrZelenskyinearlyMarch.Whilethedocumentdidn"tprovideareasonforthesecretarygeneral"sunwillingness,ThePostcitedaUNdiplomatassayingweeksoftiringinternationaltravelsoncommercialflightswasthecause.

Thetroveofleakedclassifieddocuments,numberinghundredsofpagesandresultinginthearrestofaU.S.airnationalguardsmanonchargesofdisclosingclassifiednationaldefenseinformationwithoutauthorization,hasseentheUnitedStatesscrambletoassessthedamageandrestrictaccesstoclassifiedinformationforcertainemployeesattheDepartmentofDefense.

OtherdocumentsrecentlyreportedbyU.S.mediashowedtheUnitedStateshasalsobeenspyingonalliessuchasSouthKorea,IsraelandUkraine.

AskedbyXinhuaataBrookingsInstitutioneventonMondaytocommentonallegationsofU.S.spyingeffortsandonhowWashingtonshouldsoothetheconcernsexpressedbyitsallies,DemocraticHouseRepresentativeAbigailSpanbergerrefusedtocommenton"anythingspecificallythatwasleaked."

Thecongresswoman,whopriortobecomingalawmakerworkedasanoperationsofficerattheCentralIntelligenceAgency,praisedtheU.S.administration"s"commitmenttosafeguardingtheinformationthatwecollectandourcommitmenttosafeguardingtheinformation(U.S.allies)collectandprovidetous."■
